Frequently Asked Questions

01: What is a 3M P3 filter?

3M P3 levels are the highest rated level of P filter and is used in conjunction with either a Half Mask or Full Face Mask for protection against highly toxic or irritant particulates, vapours & viruses. P3 filters provide an APF 20 protection levels with a half masks and APF 40 when used with the Full Face Mask 6000 mask.

3M have 3 P3 filters namely the 3M 2135 P3 filter, the 2138 P3 filter and the encapsulated 3M 6035 P3 filter.

The P3 filter rating is suitable for asbestos work as well as providing protection against fine toxic dusts & viruses.

02: When do you know when to change a 3M particulate filter?

What is the filter life of a 3M mask filter?

3m Particulate filters such as the 3M 2135 filter, the 3M 2138 & 3M 6035 P3 filter should be changed when breathing resistance becomes difficult (ie breathing resistance created through the blocking of the filter)

03: When do you know when to change a 3M gas/vapour/ fume filter?

What is the filter life of a 3M Fume filter?

3m Gas / vapours / fume filters should be changed as soon as “smell breakthrough” occurs (ie safe levels of contaminant smelt/tasted)

3m fume cartridge filters include the following 3M respirator filters: 3m 6055 A2 Filter, 3m 6057 ABE1 filter, 3m 6099 ABEK2P3 filter, 3m 6059 ABEK1 gas filter & the 3M 6075 Formaldehyde + A1 gas filter

N.B for substances with no smell or taste i.e low warning properties supplied air respirators should be used rather than masks & filters since any “smell breakthrough” cannot be detected. i.e isocyanates.

04: What 3M mask filters are required to protect against nuisance level organic vapour & acid gases?

The 3m 2138 filter provides combination protection against nuisance level organic vapours as well as nuisance level acid gases.

05: Do 3m have any encapsulated P3 filters?

The 3M 6035 P3 filter is encapsulated which makes it ideal for wet or hot conditions & due to the encapsulation the filter has less chance of clogging.

06: What 3M respirator filter is required for virus protection?

3m Particulate filters at the correct P3 grade are the 3M 2135 filter, the 3M 2138 & 3M 6035 P3 filter. The 3m 6035 filter is however the P3 filter of choice which allows the whole system to be disinfected without the need to be removed.

07: What 3m mask filters are required to protect from Organic Fumes?

Filters with the A symbol are the correct filters to protect against organic fumes. These will either be the 3M 6051 A1 filter or the 3m 6055 A2 filter.

Organic fume Filters are graded depending on the concentration of contaminant. Class 1 is up to 1000ppm, Class 2 is up to 5000 ppm & class 3 up to 10,000 ppm.

08: What 3m mask filters are required to protect from Inorganic Fumes?

Filters with the B symbol are the correct filters to provide gas & vapour protection against inorganic fumes such as chlorine & bromine. These will either be the 3M 6057 ABE1 filter or the 3m 6059 ABEK1 filter.

09: What 3m respirator filters are required to protect from acid gases?

Filters with the E symbol are the correct filters to provide gas & vapour protection against against acid gases such as sulphuric acid. These will either be the 3M 6057 ABE1 filter or the 3m 6059 ABEK1 filter.

10: What mask filter do for protection against need ammonia & derivatives?

Fume Filter Type K is required:

The filter including K will protect against Ammonia & organic ammonia derivatives. The 3m filters providing this protection are the 3M 6054 K filter & 3M 6059 ABEK1 fume filter cartridges.
